Chinese printer refuses Tibet book A Chinese printer has refused to print Putting Queensland on the Map by Felicity Jack for UNSW Press because it mentions the China-Tibet border. The book contains just a single line which mentions the border, which Elizabeth Menzies, publisher at UNSW Press, said the printer had suggested should be removed. When UNSW Press refused, the printer advised the publisher to print the title elsewhere and the book will be printed in Thailand. Felicity Jack's great grandfather's life is documented in the biography, including his travels throughout Australia and China. Menzies would not name the Chinese printer, and said ‘We print as many of our books as we can in Australia', but go overseas for ‘those that are colour or require something different'. ‘The author [Jack] felt very strongly that she did not want her text changed by the Chinese authorities and we stand beside that,' said Menzies. http://www.booksellerandpublisher.com.au/articles/2008/08/09123/ This article from Thorpe Bowker's Weekly Book Newsletter and Media Extra is reproduced by kind permission of Thorpe-Bowker, a division of R R Bowker LLC. © Copyright 2008, Thorpe-Bowker

Tasmanian Living Writers' Week The second biennial Tasmanian Living Writers' Week began on 15 August and runs to 24 August. Shannon Challis, special projects officer of arts@work, which coordinates the festival, reports that so far this year the festival has been a great success. ‘Over 90 people attended the festival launch with Tasmanian Tim Bowden, 160 parents and kids attended a workshop with children's author Morris Gleitzman, 250 attended a series of literary panel session and 120 attended a moving lunch with Julian Burnside QC, barrister, human rights activist and author,' she told us.
Warner Bros. Pictures, the studio producing the Harry Potter films, has announced a postponed release date for Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince, which will now be released on 17 July 2009, rather than November 2008. Warner Bros. president Alan Horn said the decision was both a result of the recent US writers' strike and the studio's wish to release the film during the US summer. Horn said the date-change would not affect the release of the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the first of which is tentatively scheduled for release in November 2010. Meanwhile, J.K. Rowling's latest book, The Tales of Beedle Bard, will be released in early December in time for Christmas. You can pre-order it here...
